Fixing Outlook lagging in typing mails
Microsoft Outlook is widely used for many companies. Like always, default setting is not optimal for daily work life. Some of them are just not handy setting for me, like automatically show the email contents at third column and make the email already read.
But this setting is driving user mad — making email typing in outlook lagging while any other software work just fine.
For now I used 2 version of Microsoft office suit. This issue happens only on Outlook 2016, not on new office 365 (office version 16).
In Outlook 2016, as I know so far, there are 2 possible options for lagging. They are
- Hardware graphics acceleration, and
- Animate controls and elements inside Windows
Hardware graphics acceleration
File > Options > Advanced > Display (near the bottom of the list of options): Disable or Activate hardware graphics acceleration box.
To show the steps I did, on the interface upper left, click “File”
Find the Options or System Properties to open the setting panel
Select Advanced, in the display section, check/uncheck the hardware graphics acceleration
or
Animate controls and elements inside Windows
When encountering the issue, I found the solution here (https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/2169577-microsoft-outlook-2016-typing-delay), the FarmerZ posted on Jun 26, 2019.
File > System Properties (Options) > Advanced — Performance — Settings — Visual Effects — uncheck the top box called “Animate controls and elements inside windows.”
However, I don’t find the setting on my Outlook 365, and therefore cannot demonstrate the demonstration and just copy FarmerZ’s solution here.
Windows 10 setting that might also help this lagging issue
Publius (https://medium.com/@mercerj.2015) in the comment suggest that the windows 10 setting might also affect the lagging performance on outlook. Due to organisation security control policy, I cannot try this solution on my own, but attached the setting routes with the idea.
The setting (check/uncheck) is called “Animate controls and elements inside windows”. To reach the setting, there are various ways, and here I have A, B, C 3 routes:
A. open “windows” tab, search [Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows], and click on result:
And then check or uncheck the “Animate controls and elements inside windows”
B. Right click on “This PC” on Desktop > select “Properties” on right-clicked panel
At system information page, Click on “Advanced system settings”
On “System properties” page, click on “Settings”
reach “Performance options” and check or uncheck the setting.
C. open the “control panel” in windows manu, if it is in category setting, please change to “Large icons” in the arrow.
Hopefully the control panel page is like this, and find “system”
And click Advanced system settings, and then follow same step in route B with same setting page.
